Regenerative Tourism information
At The Yew Tree 1628, we believe tourism should leave Borrowdale stronger than it was before — economically, socially and environmentally.
As a historic pub serving visitors to the Lake District, we aim to ensure that the benefits of tourism support the local community, landscape and economy while minimising environmental impact.

Supporting Local Producers & the Borrowdale Economy
We prioritise working with local suppliers wherever possible.
Around 70% of our food suppliers are based in Cumbria, including Herdwick lamb farmers, Basecamp for meat, Cartmel Valley for venison and the Keswick Sausage Unit.
Our bar also features local ales and regional drinks, helping keep visitor spending within the local economy and supporting small producers across Cumbria.
By sourcing locally, we reduce food miles while strengthening resilient local supply chains.
We also encourage visitor giving, supporting organisations such as Mountain Rescue and Flynn’s Barn, a Lake District charity supporting young people affected by cancer.

Reducing Waste & Operating Responsibly
We aim to minimise waste across our operations.
Food waste is reduced through careful stock management, seasonal menu planning and demand-led adjustments. Where surplus food occurs, it is shared within our wider Honister operations to avoid disposal.
Our approach includes:
-
Operating as plastic-free as practical
-
Using recyclable takeaway packaging
-
Recycling 100% of glass
-
Composting coffee grounds on site
-
Supporting Seatoller Farm through grounds reuse
These practices help reduce landfill waste while encouraging circular resource use.

Protecting Nature & the Borrowdale Landscape
Our riverside garden — recently featured in Nook Lakes Living — has been restored to create a welcoming natural space for both visitors and wildlife.
Outdoor waste bins are provided to help prevent litter, and we encourage visitors to respect the surrounding National Park landscape.
Operationally we also work to reduce environmental impact by:
-
Monitoring energy use
-
Implementing switch-off procedures
-
Using door closers to improve heat retention
-
Operating seasonal winter closures to reduce energy demand during quieter periods.
How Visitors Can Help
Visitors play an important role in supporting regenerative tourism.
By choosing local food and drink, respecting the surrounding landscape and supporting local businesses, guests help ensure that tourism continues to benefit Borrowdale’s community and environment.
Small actions — from reducing waste to supporting local suppliers — help protect the character and sustainability of the Lake District for future generations.
