If you're exploring the Lake District and fancy discovering somewhere off the beaten track, the Buttermere Infinity Pools are a must-see. Tucked away near Buttermere Lake, these natural pools offer a magical experience, with crystal-clear waters that mirror the surrounding mountains, creating the illusion of an endless horizon.

What Are the Buttermere Infinity Pools?

These unique pools are natural rock formations filled with cool, clear water from nearby streams and the lake itself. What makes them truly special is the way they reflect the sky and fells, forming a natural “infinity” effect, especially on calm days.

Whether you're a keen photographer, a nature lover, or simply looking for somewhere peaceful to unwind, this hidden spot is a true Lake District treasure.

Where Are They and How Do You Get There?

The pools are located on the shores of Buttermere Lake, nestled in the heart of Cumbria.

🥾 Directions:

Park at Gatesgarth car park, located between the village of Buttermere and Honister Slate Mine.

From there, follow the trail through Warnscale Bottom.

The walk takes around 30 minutes at a steady pace and treats you to beautiful views of Haystacks and Buttermere Lake.

The path is straightforward but can be a little rocky in places, so sturdy shoes are a good idea.

What Makes the Infinity Pools So Unique?

Unlike man-made infinity pools, these are natural and ever-changing with the weather and seasons. On calm days, the water looks like a perfect mirror. It reflects the mountains and sky. This creates great photo opportunities and a peaceful atmosphere.

Because the pools are fed by natural springs and the lake itself, the water is refreshingly clear and cool. Visitors often pause here to soak their feet, admire the views, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Planning Your Visit: What to Bring

  • Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • Clothing: Dress in layers as the weather can change quickly in the fells.

  • Refreshments: Bring water and snacks if you plan to linger.

Respect nature: Stay on the marked paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and take all litter with you.
